Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to identify the the types of idiom found in the album “purpose – Justin Bieber” and to analyze the strategies used in idiom translation. The source of data is the album of “Purpose – Justin Bieber”. There are eighteen song lyric in the album and eighteen the Indonesian translation of aong lyric. In this thesis, the writer identified the type of idiom and analyzed the strategies used in idiom translation. The writer uses Palmer’s theory (1976) to identified the type of idiom and uses Baker’s theory (1992) to analyze the strategies in idiom translation. The writer uses descriptive qualitative design and (Simak Bebas Libat Cakap) as the method. The writer uses four steps to analyze the data. They are understanding the collected data of idiom found in the song lyric album in English and Indonesian version, identifying the type of idiom based on Palmer’s theory (1976), analyzing the strategies used in idiom translation, and drawing the conclusion what types of idiom found in the song lyric album and what strategies used in idiom translation. The result of data analysis in idiom translation strategies is the idiom found in 9 songs lyric album. From the identification of idiom, the writer finds 23 idiom in the song lyric album consists of three types, they are phrasal verb which consists of 14 idioms, partial idiom which consists of 5 idioms, and prepositional verb which consists of 4 idioms. The result of data analysis in the strategies used in idiom translation is there are three strategies found in idiom translation, using idiom similar meaning and form, using idiom similar meaning and dissimilar form, and translation by paraphrase. In phrasal verb there are 3 strategies in idiom translation using idiom similar meaning and form, using idiom similar meaning but dissimilar form and translation by paraphrase. In partial idiom there are 3 strategies in idiom translation is using idiom similar meaning and form, using idiom similar meaning but dissimilar form, and translation by paraphrase. In the prepositional verb there are 3 strategies in idiom translation using idiom similar meaning and form, using idiom similar meaning but dissimilar form, and translation by paraphrase. There is no idiom strategy using translation by ommision.
