Abstract

The purposes of this research to find out the kind of errors and the causes of errors in translating narrative text from Indonesian into English using Google Translate made by the sixth semester students of English Education Study Program of Educational Sciences and Teachers’ Training Faculty of Peradaban University in the academic year 2016/2017. The subject of the research was the sixth semester student of English Education Study Program which consists of 13 students. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative research. The data were analyzed using error analysis method. The error types were classified based on Dulay’s et al theory. The causes of errors were found out based on Brown’s theory. The instrument of the study was observation and translation test. The results of the study showed that there were the highest and the lowest errors made by the students. The highest common errors was misformation error with the number that was 111 or 65% errors. The lowest error was misordering error with the number that was 11 or 6.4% errors. Based on the total result types of errors, the writer found that the number of total cause of errors were intralingual transfer had 68 or 49% cause of errors, interlingual transfer which had 29 or 20,8% cause of errors, communication strategy which had 17 or 12,2% cause of errors, and context of learning which had 25 or 18% cause of errors.
