Abstract
This study aims to analyze the types and functions of conjunctions found in Jamie Miller’s song lyrics from the Broken Memories album. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method by identifying and classifying each conjunction based on its grammatical category and function. The data source consists of six songs entitled Here’s Your Perfect, I Lost Myself in Loving You, It Is What It Is, Last Call, Longer, and Over You. The steps of analysis include collecting the lyrics, identifying conjunctions, classifying them into types, analyzing their functions, and interpreting their contribution to meaning. From the data, it can be observed that Here’s Your Perfect contains the highest number of conjunctions, with 13 occurrences (10 coordinating and 3 subordinating conjunctions). This indicates that the song employs more sentence connections and complex structures compared to the others. Meanwhile, It Is What It Is has the lowest number, with only seven occurrences. The songs Longer and Over You both show ten occurrences, while Last Call and I Lost Myself in Loving You each contain eight conjunctions. Across all songs, only two types of conjunctions were identified: coordinating and subordinating conjunctions, while correlative and compound conjunctions were not found. The functions of conjunctions in the lyrics vary depending on their types. Subordinating conjunctions such as because, when, that, and if express time, reason, condition, and expectation, helping to build emotional context and narrative depth. Meanwhile, coordinating conjunctions such as and, but, and or connect equal ideas and provide contrast or continuation of thought. Overall, conjunctions in Jamie Miller’s song lyrics not only function as grammatical elements but also as stylistic devices that enhance the emotional message and rhythm of the songs. Therefore, conjunctions contribute significantly to the lyrical flow, coherence, and emotional expression of the Broken Memories album.
