Abstract

Many elementary school teachers are required to integrate English into their teaching, even if their primary background is not in English education. This study aims to describe the challenges faced by teachers in using English to teach at SD 3 Bahasa Putera Harapan Purwokerto, to describe how these challenges impact the teaching success of teachers and students’ learning outcomes, and to describe how teachers overcome difficulties in using English as a medium of instruction. This research uses a descriptive qualitative design. The data are collected through interviews with four non-English teachers, classroom observations, and documentation. The data analysis consists of data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results show that teachers face several challenges, including limited vocabulary, lack of confidence in speaking English, grammatical inaccuracies, and difficulties in maintaining students’ understanding during English-based instruction. Despite these obstacles, some teachers make efforts to improve their English skills through self-study and collaboration with English teachers. The study concludes that professional development and structured support are essential to help teachers effectively use English in the classroom.
