Abstract

igurative language is a literary art that can be applied in oral or written form so that a sentence does not seem stiff. Basically, figurative language is part of Semantics. Semantics is the study of meaning in language. Therefore, the writer uses theory of Laurence Perrine and Thomas Arp (1978), which contains figurative language by comparison, by association, and by contrast. The objective of this study is to analyse the figurative language in English songs sung by Putri Ariani. The writer uses 10 English songs sung by Putri Ariani entitled Loneliness – Putri Ariani, Perfect Liar – Putri Ariani, Who I am – Putri Ariani, Happier – Olivia Rodrigo, I’ll Never Love Again – Lady Gaga, Someone You Loved – Lewis Capaldi, Can’t Help Falling In Love – Elvis Presley, Right Here Waiting – Richard Marx, Make You Feel My Love – Adele, and Easy On Me – Adele. This study uses descriptive qualitative because this research is collecting data in form words or songs lyric so it does not emphasize numbers. The writer finds seven of twelve types of figurative language discovered in the English songs sung by Putri Ariani there are metaphor, personification, simile, apostrophe, symbol, paradox, and hyperbole. Figurative language can make language more interesting and expressive. Therefore, the reader’s can increases creativity and create colorful language so that make it easier for writer’s of poetry, songs, and speech texts to create works. Figurative language is also important for students who are study about language because it can improve the student’s ability in the study of meaning in language. It can also be used in oral and written practice at certain times. For example, students in class when learning to write poetry or create legendary texts, novels, speeches or others. The result of this research is 54 data that includes 18 figurative language by comparison, 12 figurative language by association, and 24 figurative language by contrast. The most dominant figurative language of 10 English songs sung by Putri Ariani is hyperbole
