Abstract

This research investigates the types and frequencies of illocutionary acts performed by characters in the movie script of Avengers: Endgames. The study is conducted within the framework of Searle’s (1979) classification of speech acts, which includes five categories: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The purpose of this research is to identify how language is used by the characters to perform actions through speech in a cinematic context. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The data were obtained by observing and documenting the utterances in the movie script, then classifying them according to their illocutionary force. The analysis reveals a total of 1,252 illocutionary acts, which are categorized as follows: 713 assertive utterances, 265 directive utterances, 49 commissive utterances, 212 expressive utterances, and 13 declarative utterances. The findings indicate that assertive acts are the most dominant, reflecting the characters’ frequent need to explain, report, and assert information throughout the film. Directive acts are also significantly used, particularly during scenes involving commands, instructions, or suggestions in teamwork. Expressive acts provide emotional depth and character development, while commissive and declarative acts appear less frequently but are crucial in pivotal moments of the narrative. This study concludes that illocutionary acts are essential in shaping the dialogue, narrative flow, and character interaction in cinematic storytelling. It also highlights the importance of context in determining the function and effect of each utterance. The results of this research can serve as a reference for further studies in pragmatics, especially in the area of speech act analysis in film and media discourse.
