Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the SpeakPick Box in enhancing students’ speaking skills at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Ajibarang. A true experimental design is applied, involving 64 grade XI students divided into one control class taught with conventional media (whiteboard) and one experimental class taught using the SpeakPick Box. Data are obtained through pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires, and analyzed using Paired Sample T-Test, Gain Score, and Independent Sample T-Test. The results indicate that although both groups show a slight improvement, the difference between the experimental and control classes is not statistically significant. The control group’s mean score increases from 64.53 to 64.78 (Sig. = 0.522 > 0.05), while the experimental group improves from 62.78 to 64.06 (Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05). However, the Independent Samples T-Test result (Sig. = 0.043 < 0.05) shows that the improvement in the experimental group is not substantially higher than that of the control group. These findings indicate that the SpeakPick Box is not effective in significantly improving students’ speaking skills at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Ajibarang. The study concludes that although the use of interactive, role-play–based media such as SpeakPick Box can stimulate engagement, it does not lead to a notable enhancement in overall speaking performance compared to conventional teaching methods.These findings confirm that effectiveness of SpeakPick Box to improve students’ speaking skill at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Ajibarang is not effective.
