Abstract

Thematic progression includes the origin of the theme and how it relates to other themes and rhemes in the text. According to Paltridge (2006:148), Thematic progression as the process by which a theme in a phrase may repeat or pick up meaning from the theme or rheme that came before it. The text coherence is significantly aided by thematic progression. The purpose of this study is to identify and classify the thematic progression on Taylor Swift’s Popular Songs in 2019- 2022.This study used a qualitative research methodology. The five songs served as the research's source and contained data in the form of sentences and clauses. Subsequently, the study of theme types in thematic progression was grounded in Paltridge theory, whilst the analysis of theme types in thematic progression was informed by Halliday and McCharty concepts. Paltridge (2006: 148), there are three kinds of thematic progression pattern: constant theme, linear theme and split rheme. Therefore, the writer chose five songs to be used as research data. The result of the writer about thematic progression is for reiteration theme pattern found twenty three items, for zig-zag found twenty two items, and for split eleven items. The writer found that the most often used thematic progression types is the reiterations/constant pattern in Taylor Swift’s Popular Songs in 2019-2022.
